Styling tools such as blow dryers used too close to the hair or hot flat irons left in contact to long can actually melt the inside of your hair (the cortex). Improper perms, lightners, relaxers, tints and over-exposure to the sun can also damage the cortex. Usually, if the cortex has been damaged, the cuticle (outside layer) has been damaged as well. Damage to the outside of the hair is usually caused by friction to the hair fiber. Rough brushing and combing, towel-drying, repeated use of thermal styling equipment, improper teasing, certain cutting techniques, the use of clips or rubber bands all cause breakage of the outside cuticle. At one time, hair products were primarily made from waxes, fats and oils that coated the hair but did nothing to reinforce the structure, therefore masking damage but not treating it. Better understanding of what hair is composed of has brought about greatly improved products such as Age Recharge by Kérastase, which applies protein and moisturizing solutions that can dramatically improve weakened or sensitized areas of the hair and scalp. Kérastase products are based on scientific principles of hair that give enduring strength to the hair fiber which improves the look and durability of hair and its color.
